Village Rain Garden Project

Scholars: Jenny Engle, Kenn Bennett, and Alex Cooper
The Village Rain Garden project transformed a residential yard in a Millersville Borough neighborhood into a functional and educational green infrastructure feature. Designed with guidance from local conservation, municipal, and landscaping experts, the garden was carefully planned using soil testing and native plant selection to ensure seasonal blooms, neighborhood appeal, and effective stormwater absorption.
After receiving HOA approval and community support through presentations to local councils, watershed groups, and civic organizations, the project moved into implementation. With help from partners, students, and volunteers, the site was prepared, planted with 175 native plants, mulched, and finished with stone drainage paths and borders.
Beyond installation, the project emphasized public education through a community presentation and ongoing interest from residents and HOAs considering their own rain gardens. The Village Rain Garden now serves as a living demonstration of how small-scale projects can improve water quality, reduce runoff, and inspire community action.
